He left Sally sleeping to make his phone call in secret, softly shutting the bedroom door behind him. “A dozen red roses for tomorrow,” he told the florist. “Message: ‘With all my love, on our paper wedding anniversary. I wish I could be there with you.’” A pause. “Yes, I’ll take the chocolates too.” Satisfied his duty was done, he padded back to the bedroom, to the woman who was not his wife.
